Why GTA basements flood
Much of the GTA's older housing stock was built on combined or partially separated sewer systems. During intense rainfall, the system can surcharge and push water back up through floor drains. Newer subdivisions have their own risks: high water tables, grading that slopes toward the house, and sump pumps that fail when the power goes out.
Overland flooding vs. sewer backup
For insurance purposes, water entering through windows and doors (overland) and water entering through drains (sewer backup) are often treated differently — and each usually needs its own endorsement. We document the entry point clearly with photos and notes so your adjuster has what they need.
Prevention that actually works
After cleanup, the best protection is usually a backwater valve, a sump pump with battery backup, downspouts disconnected and extended away from the foundation, and correct lot grading. Toronto and several GTA municipalities offer subsidy programs for some of this work — ask us and we'll point you to the right one.

Can wet carpet in a basement be saved?
Carpet from a clean water leak can often be dried in place if we get there fast. Carpet and underpad soaked by sewer backup or floodwater should be removed for health reasons.
